Transparent Opaque Translucent Objects

Concept Explanation

Transparent, Opaque and Translucent Objects

When we look around ourselves we find various type of materials. These materials can be broadly classified in three categories depending upon how the materials transmit light  i.e. Transparent, Translucent and Opaque materials

  • Transparent material: Materials that allow light to pass through without any significant scattering or absorption are called transparent materials. Objects can be seen clearly through a transparent material. While passing through the transparent material scattering is very less hence the object can be seen clearly. Examples clear air, clear glass, clean water, cellophane paper.
  • Glass

    Water

    Plastic Sheet

  • Translucent materials: Materials that allow light to pass through them, but scatter or diffuse the light as it passes through them  are called translucent materials. A parallel beam of light comes  out scattered after passing through them in all directions hence the object can not be seen clearly. Examples butter paper, a frosted glass; paper smeared with oil and smoked glass.
  • Plastic Glass

    Ground Glass

    Butter Paper

  • Opaque material: Materials that completely block light are called opaque materials. While passing through the opaque material the light is absorbed or reflected back. As it does not allow the light to pass through them so we can not see the objects through them. Examples cloth, card board sheet, mud, cement, coal and wood.
  • Cloth

    Card Board Sheet

    Wooden Door
